Offline billing: how a shop keeps billing when the internet drops
Offline billing software keeps a full database on the counter device, so it can look up items, price them, apply GST and print the bill with no network. Bills queue on the device and sync to the cloud when the connection returns. Cloud-only billing apps stop at the counter when the internet does.
Why it matters in an Indian store
Mobile data drops inside markets and malls, broadband goes down in the monsoon, and the busiest hours of a wedding-season Saturday are exactly when a queue cannot wait.
If the billing screen needs the internet to open an item, the store goes back to a paper bill book, and that bill then has to be entered again later.
What to check before you buy
- Can the till search items, apply discounts and GST, and print with Wi-Fi switched off? Test it in the demo.
- Are offline bills numbered without clashes when two counters sync later?
- Does a bill rung offline land in the right shift and day when it syncs?
- What happens to a UPI or card payment if the network drops mid-payment?
How KounterPOS handles it
- Each Android till keeps an on-device database and bills fully offline.
- Bills sync when the network returns, and are booked to the shift they were rung in.
- If two tills produce the same bill number, the server issues a new number and keeps the one printed on the slip, so returns can still find the bill.
- Card and UPI on Paytm EDC; a payment that never completes is reversed in the books automatically.
Common questions
Can I bill without internet?
Yes, with software that runs on the device. KounterPOS bills fully offline on Android tills and syncs when the network returns.
Does UPI work offline?
UPI needs a network for the payment itself. The bill can still be made offline; take cash or retry UPI once the network is back.
