Tally export for retail stores: send your CA clean books

Use billing software that posts a balanced double-entry journal for every sale, return and stock movement, and exports ledgers and vouchers to Tally as XML. Your CA imports the file instead of retyping bills, and the books match the till by construction.

Why retyping bills into Tally goes wrong

When the shop bills on one system and the CA keys totals into Tally at month end, small differences creep in: a missed return, a UPI payment booked as cash, a discount on the wrong line. Finding them later takes far longer than avoiding them.

The fix is to make the till the single source of truth and move its entries to Tally as data, not as typing.

What your CA needs from the store

  • Sales vouchers with GST split by rate (5% and 18% for footwear) and by CGST/SGST or IGST.
  • Receipts split by payment mode: cash, UPI, card and any credit.
  • Credit notes for returns and exchanges.
  • Purchase vouchers from goods receipts, and debit notes for return-to-vendor.
  • GSTR-1 data for the period.

How KounterPOS handles it

  • Every sale, return and stock movement posts a balanced double-entry journal the moment it happens.
  • The Tally bridge exports ledgers and vouchers as XML for any period, ready to import.
  • It can compare against a Tally Day Book export to show exactly which entries differ.
  • GSTR-1 export from the same numbers the till billed.

Common questions

Can billing software export to Tally?

Many can. Look for an export of ledgers and vouchers as Tally XML rather than a summary spreadsheet, so your CA can import entries directly. KounterPOS exports XML for any period.

Do I still need Tally if my POS has accounting?

Not for day-to-day books, but many CAs file from Tally. A clean export lets the store run on its POS while the CA keeps working in Tally.
